Baby Aliya weighs the same as an average six-year-old girl whose parents live in a remote village in the Indian state of Jharkhand. When Aliya was born she was 4 kg but started rapidly gaining weight once she h!t the four month mark. Her mother 25-year old Shabana said, ‘A few months after her birth, she starting gaining weight. We had to buy her a new pair of clothes every two weeks because the old ones become too tight for her.’The enormous weight is putting baby Aliya’s life in d@nger and the family too are lacking financial means to get her the best medical treatments.

His 28-year old father Mohannad Saleem said, ‘We have tried our best, but we could only afford to take her to the local hospital. The doctors in the village could not tell us clearly what she is suffering from. We took Aliya to a doctor in Ranchi. After the check up the doctor suggested that we go to another city, but we couldn’t afford that so we didn’t take her.’ Fortunately, the parents were able to get consultation at Fortis Hospital on the outskirts of Delhi and luckily get to the bottom of their daughter’s enormous weight gain. She was looked up by Dr Krishan Chugh, head of paediatrics at Fortis Hospital. He said, ‘This is the heaviest baby at 10 months of age that I have seen. I have seen 10kg-plus, 12kg-plus babies in the past. But this is way above the rest. Over 18 kilograms is an extreme weight figure. This could be case of morbid obesity or even a hormonal imbalance. But we need to conduct some tests on her before making a proper diagnosis.’

He added, ‘The treatment depends on the diagnosis that we make. There are some disorders that can be treated. As far as the reversal of this weight gain is concerned, that would depend on when we find a cause for it.’ Aliya’s huge body frame creates problem$ for her mother, who has hard time to hold her in her lap for long time. Her mother also says that she eats a lot. She eats rice and chapatti every two hours and snacks down to biscuit and chocolate in the middle. She also can drink 5 liter of milk a day but they do not feed them that much. She also eats two chapattis and m!lk before going to bed. The family also has financial problem$ to feed her but her father borrows money from his friends just to feed her.
