KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia—Police deployed hundreds of riot police around the center of the Malaysian capital Saturday ahead of what is shaping up as a large protest against Prime Minister Najib Razak’s management of the economy and the debt problems at a state investment fund.
Authorities said the planned protest is illegal while the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, a government agency, said in a statement it would block websites promoting or encouraging the demonstration, which is set to begin near Merdeka, or Independence, Square in the center of Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. The government also announced that it was against the law to wear yellow T-shirts in support of the rally.
The directives didn’t do much to deter some protesters. Many were seen wearing yellow, some cycling to the various assembly points around Merdeka Square, others taking trains or other forms of public transport into Kuala Lumpur’s busy city center. Some vendors were reported to be openly selling the garments on the streets.
